Ozzy Osbourne ‘Ordinary Man’ Record Listening Party at the Rainbow – Global Tattoo Event at Shamrock Tattoo on February 20, 2020 and Ameoba Record store signing on February 21,2020
By Mark “WEISSGUY” Weiss
In the Seventies the Rainbow became known as a hangout for rock musicians. When hard rock and metal took over in the following decade a new breed of bands emerged and the scene flourished even more. A photo assignment to shoot Ozzy in 1981 led to one of my first trips to the West Coast, and the Rainbow was without a doubt my first stop. As Gene Simmons would say, it was the “Church of Rock & Roll.” Among the congregation were Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper, Robert Plant, Keith Moon, Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, Elvis Presley and countless other rock royalty that made the Rainbow the place to eat, drink and be very, very merry.
When Ozzy turned 70 in December, 2018 I was invited to celebrate with friends and family in Los Angeles. After the party I stopped by the Rainbow and decided to contribute a few Ozzy photographs that had been on display at the Andaz Hotel in Hollywood—formerly the infamous “Riot House.” After Ozzy performed at the Sunset Strip Music Festival in 2009 he came to commemorate the gallery of photographs.
A week before the listening party for Ozzy’s new album, Ordinary Man, Sharon reached out to me and asked if the photographs were still at the Andaz, and if she could use them to decorate the Rainbow for the party. I explained that there were a few already up. But she said she wanted the entire Rainbow to be photographs of Ozzy. I sent 50 of my favorite images, and 20 were chosen to be printed on canvas and hung around the two floors of the legendary bar. After the event I brought the photographs to Ozzy to sign and be auctioned off, with the proceeds going to a Foundation to raise awareness and help find a cure for Parkinson’s. – Mark Weiss

“Ozzy pretty much got me into playing Metal and inspired me to form my band Santa Cruz, and he’s my girl’s favorite artist, so when we saw Shamrock was doing an Ozzy pop up tattoo event there was no way we would miss it. My girl, who already had three Ozzy tats before this, decided to get two and I got one. In our wildest dreams we had no expectations of meeting The Ozzman himself so when that happened we we’re both totally mind blown. He and Sharon turned out to be the nicest people ever too so that was amazing. At the end of the day it turned out to be a dream come true for both of us and we’re super grateful to Shamrock, Ozzy and Sharon for making this happen.”
